Producer, artistic director and cultural entrepreneur, Seydou Barry grew up in Saint-Chamas, in Provence, the son of a Guinean father from Conakry, a former soldier, and a Cambodian mother. At home, his older siblings filled the house with soul and funk — James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Stanley Clarke. Jazz arrived in his teens, behind the counter of a record shop in Salon-de-Provence: a Duke Ellington album sparked the passion, and the shop’s owner soon gave him his first job in the music trade, in Aix-en-Provence. Years of travel followed, from the roads of Europe to New York, Tokyo and Dakar.

In 1987 he organised his first Afro-jazz festival in Saint-Chamas, followed by two more editions, and began presenting concerts by artists such as Michel Petrucciani. Having discovered Ahmad Jamal on stage in the late 1980s, he later invited the pianist to Marseille. Jamal accepted, and the encounter became a lifelong bond: the master turned mentor, and Seydou Barry went on to produce concerts pairing him with the Philippe Petrucciani Quartet, while also working with Liz McComb and Roy Haynes and organising a European tour for James Brown.

From 2002 to 2006, in Miramas, he served as cultural advisor to the mayor and then as artistic director of the Théâtre de la Colonne, where he launched a jazz club and a free world music festival. With Catherine Vallon-Barry he co-founded ACM Productions — for “American Classical Music”, the term Ahmad Jamal preferred to “jazz” — and its label Jazzbook Records, home to releases such as Blue Moon (CD recorded in New York, DVD filmed at the Paris Olympia) and Saturday Morning. He has also worked with Yusef Lateef, Archie Shepp, Marcus Miller, Michael Lang, founder of Woodstock, choreographer Marie-Claude Pietragalla, The Jacksons and many more…

After seventeen years, alongside Catherine Vallon-Barry, as Ahmad Jamal’s managers and producers, until the pianist’s passing in 2023, they now devote themselves to production and international touring with We Do Sync and Jazzbook Records.

Le jazz arrive à l’adolescence, chez un disquaire de Salon-de-Provence : un album de Duke Ellington déclenche la passion, et le patron de la boutique lui offre bientôt son premier emploi dans le métier, à Aix-en-Provence. Suivent des années de voyage, des routes d’Europe à New York, Tokyo et Dakar.

Après avoir découvert Ahmad Jamal sur scène à la fin des années 1980, il invite le pianiste à Marseille. Jamal accepte, et la rencontre devient un lien d’une vie : le maître devient mentor. Seydou Barry produit ensuite des concerts réunissant Ahmad Jamal et le Philippe Petrucciani Quartet, travaille avec Liz McComb et Roy Haynes, et organise une tournée européenne de James Brown.

De 2002 à 2006, à Miramas, il est conseiller culturel du maire puis directeur artistique du Théâtre de la Colonne, où il crée un jazz club et un festival gratuit de musiques du monde. Avec Catherine Vallon-Barry, il fonde ACM Productions — pour « American Classical Music », le terme qu’Ahmad Jamal préférait à « jazz » — et son label Jazzbook Records, qui publie notamment Blue Moon (CD enregistré à New York, DVD filmé à l’Olympia) et Saturday Morning. Il collabore aussi avec Yusef Lateef, Archie Shepp, Marcus Miller, Michael Lang, fondateur de Woodstock, la chorégraphe Marie-Claude Pietragalla, The Jacksons et bien d’autres…

Après dix-sept ans aux côtés d’Ahmad Jamal, avec Catherine Vallon-Barry, comme managers et producteurs, jusqu’à la disparition du pianiste en 2023, ils se consacrent aujourd’hui à la production et à la diffusion internationale avec We Do Sync et Jazzbook Records.
